Earth Day underwater cleanup

Volunteers from the Tacoma scuba community are joining forces to help the environment this Earth Day. The cleanup takes place at the Point Defiance Boathouse in Tacoma. Last year's event removed 810 pounds of trash from the area's waters. This cleanup is part of an ongoing effort to conserve marine life as well as preserve the environment. Participating in the cleanup is a great way for you to promote your business, and also allows you to meet people who love scuba diving.

To remove fishing gear from Tacoma's waterfront, organizers plan to get kayakers and divers together. Once the net has been removed from the water, divers will lift it out of there using a boat elevator. Wounded Warriors will allow some participants to take large pieces of trash or other waste off the water. The organizers hope the cleanup will preserve our waterways and offer a unique experience for the local community.

Rockfish survey

Scuba divers can help save threatened rockfish species by participating in a community-based rockfish survey at Tacoma SCUBA. This dive is part Harbor WildWatch citizen science collaboration with NOAA. Survey participation is open to all divers. The training takes place during the dive brief. Night diving is permitted for those who are certified.

In 1998, WDFW initiated a multi-year mark capture study near Westport (Washington). This monitoring system, which includes five annual releases for black rockfish, is part of a sport fishery tag recovery monitoring system. These fish were released from pinnacles that were fished by Westport charter fishing boats. This survey involves placing two wire tags coded within the opercular muscle of these fish in order to identify individual captures.

Easy exit with just pounds of trash

You can go scuba diving near Commencement Bay if you are looking for a spot in the Greater Tacoma area. Earth Day volunteers collected 47 pounds worth of trash from the waters. Octopuses, fishing wire, and glass bottles were all part of the garbage. The Marine Science and Technology Center (MaST), a part of Highline Community College organized the clean up. A MaST cleanup previously removed hundreds and thousands of pounds from the water around Des Moines.

Observation on wounded bull sea-lion

Tacoma dive group, Washington had the honor of seeing an amazing sight while they were scuba diving. A bull sea lion was shot by an arrow and stunned divers. The shark bite left a scar on the eye of the blind animal. Afterwards, Bjorn was transported to the Marine Mammal Care Center in Los Angeles where rescuers helped him gain weight. Bjorn was named for a character in "Vikings" TV series. This mighty animal, which is nearly 400 lbs in weight, now resides at the Tacoma Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium.

A Tacoma dive group experienced this spectacular sight in October. It was the first sighting of a sea lion while diving. The group was so excited, they formed groups to watch the action. Observations also reveal the playful nature of sea lions. Sea lion pups tend to gather in groups of similar age, and will play with divers in the water. The pups also like to play with the divers, jumping into the water to give them toys and interacting with bubble streams.
