Earth Day underwater cleanup

Volunteers from Tacoma's scuba community have joined forces to clean up the environment on Earth Day. The cleanup will take places at Point Defiance Boathouse. 810 lbs of trash was removed from the area's waterways during last year's cleanup. This cleanup is part of an ongoing effort to conserve marine life as well as preserve the environment. Getting involved is a great way to promote your business and meet other people who enjoy scuba.

The organizers are hoping to get kayakers as well as scuba divers working together to clean up the Tacoma waterfront. Once the net has been removed from the water, divers will lift it out of there using a boat elevator. Wounded Warriors can help participants remove large quantities of trash and other debris. Organizers are hoping the cleanup will help preserve our waters and provide a unique experience for the community.

Rockfish survey

Scuba divers can help save threatened rockfish species by participating in a community-based rockfish survey at Tacoma SCUBA. This dive is part Harbor WildWatch citizen science collaboration with NOAA. The survey is open for all divers. No experience or qualification required. The training is done during the dive brief. The participant must be certified to take part in night diving.

In 1998, WDFW initiated a multi-year mark capture study near Westport (Washington). This project involves a five-year annual release of black rockfish as part of a sport fishing tag-recovery system. These fish were released onto pinnacles in the Westport charter-fishing fleet area. The survey involves the placement of two coded wire tags within the opercular musculature of these fish to determine individual identification after recapture.

You can get rid of a lot of trash in one go

Consider the waters near Commencement Beach if you're looking to go scuba dive in the greater Tacoma vicinity. Earth Day saw 47 pounds of garbage collected by volunteer divers. Octopuses, fishing net, and glass bottles made up the majority of the garbage. The Marine Science and Technology Center, part of Highline Community College, organized the clean-up. A MaST cleanup in the past removed hundreds upon thousands of pounds of trash around Des Moines.

Observation on wounded bull sea-lion

Tacoma, Washington divers had the chance to witness an extraordinary sight while scubadiving. A bull sea lion was shot by an arrow and stunned divers. The shark bite left a scar on the eye of the blind animal. Bjorn, who was blind from the shark bite, was taken to Los Angeles' Marine Mammal Care Center where rescuers assisted him in gaining weight. Bjorn was named for a character in "Vikings" TV series. The mighty sea lion, which weighs in at nearly 400 pounds, is now residing at Tacoma Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium.

A Tacoma dive group experienced this spectacular sight in October. It was the first sighting of a sea lion while diving. The group was so excited, they formed groups to watch the action. Observations show the playful nature of the sea lions. The sea lion pups will often play in the water with divers and form groups of like-aged friends. The pups enjoy playing with divers and jumping in the water to provide toys for them.
