What is an Aqua Lung?

What is an AquaLung? It is an open-circuit, self-contained breathing apparatus. Aqua-Lungs are a self-contained breathing device that was developed in the early days of modern technology. They quickly became very popular and have enjoyed commercial success all over the world. This type of equipment is often called a demand valve, twin-hose diving regulator, or simply a diving regulator. Jacques Cousteau and Emile Gagnan were some of the first to use aqua-lungs, and they became an instant hit in the world of diving.

Jacques Cousteau

Jacques Cousteau created the first open-circuit, self-contained underwater breathing apparatus in the 1940s. Cousteau was inspired by a demand-valve system that provided compressed oxygen to divers when they breathe underwater. The Aqua-Lung is the name of the device that opened the sport to everyone who had an interest. Aqua-Lung by Cousteau became the standard for divers around the world.

Emile Gagnan

Emile Gagnan and Jacques-Yves Cousteau invent the Aqua Lung in the 1940s. Its design was inspired by the 19th-century designs of diving helmets. It allows underwater divers the ability to breathe through a mouthpiece, which releases compressed oxygen activated by diver's breath. Gagnan further refined the regulator valve to allow for automatic air supply to the diver's lips. The amount of breath taken by the diver is then proportional to compressed air. This device was a breakthrough in the diving industry, allowing people to explore ocean depths for scientific observation, military use, and recreational purposes.

The first open-circuit demand regulator

Cousteau created the Aqua-Lung and patent it in 1946. The Aqua-Lung has been a popular scuba regulator ever since. Gagnan was Cousteau’s father and Emile Gagnan was his French chemist colleague. They were all familiar with Cousteau's research, and they decided to work together and create Aqua-Lung regulator.
