Learn how to become a Cavern Diver

scuba club cozumel

A scuba diving course is required if you want to become a cavern diver. This course includes four scuba dives: the first is an outdoor practice dive, where you will learn the basic techniques of handling line and reel, avoiding silt-outs, and air management. Your instructor can also help you plan your dives and manage your orientation. After the course you will be certified to dive in caves and other caves following safety rules.

Safety rules

Cave diving safety protocols follow the Rule of Threes. The cave diver should have three different sources of light and a minimum of two separate tanks, either independently or manifold mounted. They should also separate their gas into three distinct sections in order to have enough to last the dive. If the dive team has previous experience with cave diving, a more conservative approach to gas management is recommended. Cave divers should not only avoid cave hazards but also practice safe diving practices.

Equipment

Cave diving requires special equipment. You should have two safety reels. The one should be used for running guideline and the other should be used while the diver is in the cavern. Each diver should have a safety reel that has enough line to reach the cave's entry and the longest permanent line. Many manufacturers will bundle the spools with guideline at the edge when you purchase a new reel. This makes them more likely to jam. You should trim about 10 meters (30 feet) of your line before you use it to avoid jamming.

Maximum penetration

TDI offers a cavern diving course for scuba divers who want to dive in areas that do not allow direct vertical access. This includes diving in caverns and underhangs. This course is not required to be able to dive in caverns, but it will teach you the skills necessary to make the most out of these environments. You will learn to navigate the often-hidden spaces safely.

Maximum depth

Cavern diving comes with its own limitations. You must never dive at night, and be aware of your limits. Additionally, cavern diving requires more advanced training than most other types of diving. To be able to dive in caverns safely, you will need to know the basics and understand your limits. Before you dive in caves, you should have experience with it. After that, you are ready to embark on your journey into the cavern diving world!
